Beneficial Lemon Cultivation In India And Methods

Lemon cultivation is the required fruit crop after Banana and Mango. It ranks 6 in the production of Lemon in the world. Lemon adds importance to food or juice because of its flavour and taste and medicinal and nutritious benefits. In addition, they contain folate, potassium, molybdenum, flavonoids and compounds, which many dieticians recommend for daily intake, which boosts the immune system. Lemons can grow in all types of soils. However, it grows well in soils with a pH range of 5.5-7.0. light loam and well-drained the most suitable for lemon cultivation. 

Lemon Land preparation

Land should be cultivated thoroughly, cross cultivated and levelled correctly with the help of excellent tractor models like Mahindra jivo 365. The best season of planting is from June to August. The seeds should be sown with an average spacing of 4.5 m X 4.5 m in light soils, whereas sterile and rainfall areas spacing should be 5mX5m. Pits of size 60x60x60cm should be followed to start the seedlings and required to add 10Kg of FYM, and 500g of free superphosphate should be used in the pits before planting the seeds. A minimum of 208-250 plant density should be maintained in 1 acre.

Nutrients Requirement For Lemon

Apply the whole amount of well-decomposed cow dung during December. In contrast, urea must be applied in two parts, one in February and the other in April/May, if fruit drops are recognised in excessive spray 2,4-D 10gm in 500 lit of water. Do this in March-end and the next one in April end. In addition, you can spread these nutrients with the help of tractors and trailers. You should use a reasonable and value for money tractor like Eicher 188 for this type of operation. 

Irrigation For Lemon 

Lemon requires it at normal levels. Minimum irrigation must be provided during winters as over-irrigation may lead to diseases like Root rot and collar rot. Irrigation must be supplied at high-frequency levels, which is beneficial to the crops.


To allow the growth of the firm trunk, shoots of about 45-50 cm from the ground level should be removed. The central part should have remained open for the branches to grow and get distributed on all sides. All the diseased/ dried parts/ deadwood/ drooping parts should be removed periodically and figured out well.

Lemon Varieties In India

Assam Nimbu/ Nemu Tenga

The name refers to the two kinds of foods in Assam, Gol Nemu and Kazi Nemu. Gol Nemu is round and sweet. Further, it is usually larger than other types. Kazi Nemu, on the other hand, is engaging with an elongated oval shape. This Nemu is common in Assam due to its advantage in the Assamese menu.


This greenish-yellow, short-living quality is similar to Eureka, another lemon variety in its elongated shape. The bulk of these lemons is average, with a raised nipple at the apex. Along with this, they are pretty acidic.

Sweet Lemon/Lime

This variety is produced mainly in the areas of Malabar and Nilgiris. They are usually non-acidic. You can eat this kind of fruit rather than juicing it. Those lemons or limes also go by the sign of Mosambi in India.


Commercial cultivation of this kind happens in India. These lemons are oval or oblong in shape and yellow in appearance, along with a decent amount of juice in them. Therefore, this variety of lemons is suitable for pickles and preserves.

Rough Lemon

This kind has such a name due to the harsh, rugged, and different shapes of its skin. It also bears a strong scent and flavour. This type is said to have its origins in the wilds of Northern India.  They have significantly less amount of liquid and pulp.

Nepali Oblong/ Pat Nebu

The commercial culture of this variety takes place in India, with its roots in Assam. This lemon quality has a smooth and glossy surface with average acidity and very few or no seeds.


This kind of Lemon is bright yellow with a great nipple at the top. Moreover, just similar to that of Lisbon, it is also short maintenance and low yielding cultivar.

Nepali Round

A successful cultivar in the lands of South India. Despite the name, the Nepali round type also has its origins in India. This variety is very favourable and has very few seeds.
